Placement Procedures

  1. Continuing ESOL students must successfully complete all four ESOL courses at the high- intermediate level (ESOL 0337, 0338, 0339, and 0346) to advance to the advanced ESOL level.
  2. New students are advised to take the TSI assessment.
  3. TSI assessment identifies students as college-ready or not college-ready.
  4. All students who are identified as not college-ready (developmental education) must meet with an advisor or ESOL instructor.
  5. If the student’s elementary, middle, and high school education was completed in the United States, continue with developmental education placement.
  6. If the student’s middle and high school education was completed in the United States, continue with developmental education placement.
  7. If only part of middle and/or high school education for the student was completed in the United States, refer the student to the testing center for appropriate ESOL placement test.
  8. Please note that if a student scores very low on TSI assessment but has completed all formal schooling in the United States, the student may have a learning disability.
  9. Once a student completes the ESOL placement test, use the following scores for placement:

    RS= Reading Skills,  LU= Language Use, SM= Sentence Skills
