Mathematics Faculty

Janice PhillipJanice Phillipp teaches College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I, and Calculus II for Texas Southmost College (TSC) since 2013. She earned her Master of Science degree in Mathematics from Texas A&M University in Kingsville in 1981. While working on her undergraduate degree, she tutored mathematics and while working on her Master of Science degree, she taught College Algebra and Calculus at Texas A&M University in Kingsville. She began teaching mathematics for TSC in 1981 and continued teaching for the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC) beginning in 1992 and throughout the institution’s tenure. She has worked on numerous projects, including the Minority Science Improvement Project, UT Tele-Campus Project, and numerous course redesign projects, all involving mathematics.

Dennis SalinasDennis Salinas received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 2009 and his Master of Science degree in Mathematics in 2010. He had taught College Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Introductory Algebra at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC) from 2008 thru 2011. He then began his career at Texas Southmost College, teaching developmental courses, including Introductory Algebra as well as STAR program courses. He is also currently teaching College Algebra. He has helped develop curricula for Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, STAR courses, and dual enrollment courses. He has also attended the City Math Meet competitions that are held every year by BISD in different high schools in which he has helped develop exams as well as helped grade exams for the competitions.

Apolinar ZapataApolinar Zapata, Ph.D. earned a Master of Science degree in Management from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Mexico in 1995. He then received a doctoral degree in Engineering in 1999, also from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Mexico, and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC) in 2010. Dr. Zapata was a lecturer for the Department of Mathematics, a research assistant for Title V, and a learning instructional specialist in Mathematics. He has taught a broad amount of courses, including college algebra, contemporary math, analytic geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, introduction to computers for technologists, and engineering economics. He currently teaches developmental math courses as well as College Algebra and Contemporary Mathematics.

Gloria RangelGloria Rangel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 2009, and completed a Master's of Science degree in Mathematics in 2010. She taught mathematics at the high school level for 5 years from 2009 through 2014 and then taught at Texas State Technical College in 2014-15. Also, she has taught mathematics as an adjunct instructor for UTB/TSC before beginning her career at Texas Southmost College in 2015. At TSC, she has taught developmental mathematics, College Algebra, Pre-Calculus and Calculus I, including Dual Enrollment courses.

Gloria RangelLaura M. Villarreal, Ed.D. teaches College Algebra and Math for Teachers I and II. She earned a Master of Science degree from Pan American University and a Doctor’s Degree of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston. She has a Secondary Teaching certificate from the State of Texas and taught several years at a public high school before joining TSC in 2013.
