Students at Texas Southmost College have been given provided another opportunity at academic success with a recent donation made by the Brownsville Sunrise Rotary Club.

The Sunrise Rotary Club donated $10,051.60 to go toward student scholarships that cover tuition, books and supplies.

“The generosity of the Brownsville Sunrise Rotary will have a positive impact on the students who receive these scholarships,” said TSC Coordinator of Institutional Advancement Melissa Muzquiz. “This support allows TSC to meet the needs of students as they pursue their education.”

The scholarships will go to eligible TSC freshmen and sophomores who are enrolled as full-time students taking 12 or more semester credit hours.

Andy Zamarripa, Brownsville Sunrise Rotary Club past president, said the organization has been giving to TSC since the chapter’s inception in 1986.

“We feel that by using the money we receive from fundraisers and placing it back into our community has a big impact,” said Zamarripa. “We know that giving back to TSC in the form of scholarships is a way of helping students achieve their goals and dreams.”

Zamarripa added that Sunrise Rotary is in the process of creating an endowment that will continue to help students for years to come.

Muzquiz said that the establishment of this endowment will assist in increasing attainment of associate degrees and certificates for TSC students across many disciplines, including continuing education.

TSC Vice President of Finance and Administration Gisela Figueroa said it is donations from partners like this that keep dreams alive.

“Sometimes our students need help achieving their educational and career goals,” said Figueroa. “And with donations like this that go to student scholarships, it gives our students the chance to better themselves, their lives and that of their families.”

Figueroa added that the impact these donors have on TSC students is invaluable.

“Brownsville Sunrise Rotary Club is a long-time partner of TSC and we are grateful for everything members have done to support our college and students,” she said. “We look forward to growing our partnership in the years to come.”
