State Grants

State grants are awarded based on financial aid as determined by the results in the FAFSA. State grants provide financial aid that does not have to be repaid. Some grants require the student to maintain a certain grade point average (GPA or take certain courses. We encourage students to apply by submitting their FAFSA by the priority deadline of March 15th.



Towards Excellence, Access and Success (TEXAS) Grant Program

The following information is accurate for students entering the program on or after September 1, 2005.

Program Purpose:

The Texas Legislature established the TEXAS (Towards EXcellence, Access and Success) Grant to make sure that well-prepared high school graduates with financial need could go to college.

Initial Year (IY) Student Eligibility Requirements

To receive a basic initial award through the TEXAS Grant Program, a student must:

  • Be enrolled at least three-quarter time as:
    1. An undergraduate student who:
      • Graduated from an accredited public or private high school in Texas;
      • Completed the Recommended or Distinguished Achievement high school program (or its equivalent); and
      • Enroll in an undergraduate degree or certificate program at an approved institution within 16 months from high school graduation having not accumulated more than 30 SCH’s (excluding credits for dual enrollment or by examination); OR
    2. An undergraduate student who:
      • Earned an associate’s degree from a public or private nonprofit institution of higher education in Texas, and
      • Enroll in an eligible institution within 12 months after receiving the associate’s degree; OR
    3. An undergraduate student who:
      • Graduated from an accredited public or private high school in Texas May 1, 2013 or later;
      • Completed the Recommended or Distinguished Achievement high school program (or its equivalent); and
      • Enlisted in military service within 12 months of high school graduation and enrolled in an eligible General
      • Academic Teaching Institution (GATI) within 12 months of receiving an honorable discharge.
  • Be registered with Selective Service, or be exempt
  • Have a 9 month expected family contribution (EFC) of no more than $4,620
  • Be classified by the institution as a Texas resident
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance

 

Renewal Year (RY) Student Eligibility Requirements

  • Be enrolled at least three-quarter time as an undergraduate student who previously received an initial year award;
  • Have a calculated financial need;
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
    • GPA
      • End of Initial Year = Meet institutions SAP policy
      • End of Subsequent Years = Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
    • Completion Rate
      • End of Initial Year = Meet institutions SAP policy
      • End of Subsequent Years = 75% completion of attempted hours for the year and completion of 24 hours for the year
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance.

 Award Amount

For 2013-2014 the maximum award for Public Community Colleges is $2,640 for the year.

Application Process

You apply for the TEXAS Grant when you complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or other application as required by your college's financial aid office. Funding is limited, so you need to submit your application as soon as possible after January 1 of your senior year. The financial aid office at each college and university will determine if TEXAS Grant is part of the aid package that is offered to you.

Hardship Appeal Policy

Should a student fail the renewal requirements, they have the option to submit a Hardship Appeal based on extenuating circumstances. The Hardship Appeal form is available in person at the Financial Aid Office.


Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG)

Program Purpose

The purpose of the TEOG Program is to provide grants of money to enable eligible students to attend two-year public institutions of higher education in Texas.

Initial Year (IY) Student Eligibility Requirements

  • Be enrolled at least half-time as an entering undergraduate student in the first 30 hours (or its equivalent) of an associate’s degree or certificate program at an eligible institution (excluding credits for dual enrollment or by examination);
  • Be classified as a Texas resident;
  • Have a 9 month expected family contribution (EFC) of no more than $2,000
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance;
  • Be registered for Selective Service, or be exempt; and
  • Not be concurrently receiving the Texas Grant Renewal Year (RY) Student Eligibility Requirements
  • Be enrolled at least half-time as an undergraduate who previously received an initial TEOG award and does not have an associate’s degree
  • Have calculated financial need
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
    • GPA
      • End of Initial Year = Institution’s SAP Policy
      • End of Subsequent Years = Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
    • Completion Rate
      • End of Initial Year = Institution’s SAP Policy
      • End of Subsequent Years = 75% completion of attempted hours for the year

Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG)

A program designed for students who may or may not be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant. Applicants must meet most of the same requirements for a Pell Grant and must show some remaining unmet financial need. Funds do not need to be repaid. Residents, nonresidents and foreign students (both undergraduates and graduates), are eligible for this grant. Applicants must attend a Texas public college or university. Funds are awarded to eligible students on a first-come, first-serve basis until funds are exhausted.
