When he was six years old, Christian Torres saw his Aunt Rosie cut her finger while slicing watermelon during a family event. The youngster calmly retrieved the First Aid kit and began to disinfect and dress his aunt’s wound with gauze, as she watched in amazement at how her 6-year-old nephew cared for her.

Since then, people that know him have told Torres that he has a knack for caring for others. It’s no wonder that he decided to pursue a pathway at Texas Southmost College that will help him reach his dream of becoming a physician’s assistant.
During his first semester at TSC in fall 2015, Torres planned to pursue a nursing degree. However, TSC Biology Instructor Dr. Alberto Herrera saw what others had seen in him and helped guide Torres toward a career path that can help him realize his full potential.
“Dr. Herrera opened my eyes to something else,” Torres explained. “I was thinking of going straight into the nursing program and he began talking about pre-med, so I kind of changed my route a little bit.”
“I’m taking the classes I need at TSC to help me transfer to a four-year institution that has a physician’s assistant program,” he added. “Classes are more affordable at TSC and it’s close to home.”
Although he has a passion for caring for others, the 19-year-old Los Fresnos native also has a passion for dance. He acquired his love for dance from an aunt that owns a dance studio in Houston. She teaches a wide array of dance from ballet and tap dance to merengue and salsa.
“My aunt is an incredible dancer,” Torres said. “I started to pursue hip-hop, break dance and motion.”
During high school at Los Fresnos, Torres played basketball and participated in track during his freshman and sophomore years. In his final two years of high school, he continued with track, where he specialized in the pole vault, and joined theatre.
“Theatre wasn’t just acting,” he explained. “I was able to dance and our group was sent to other schools to perform.”
What does TSC mean to you?
“I really like the environment here. The people here are so much friendlier and they’re attentive. If you need something, they’re there for you. If you have a problem they’ll try to fix it for you.”
What’s your dream?
“I have two dreams. I have a passion for dancing and I would like to continue to pursue it. It’s a little side thing I do and my high school still calls me to help them. My other dream is to become a physician’s assistant. I have a passion for caring for others and I want to help lift them up.”
