About Rosa
Criminal Justice major Rosa Almazán has her eye set on the prize and is within a semester’s grasp of graduating in December with an associate degree from Texas Southmost College.
Almazán graduated from Houston’s Alief Elsik High School in 2013 and immediately sought out TSC upon her family’s return to Brownsville.
Due to her father’s job in construction, the 20-year-old Brownsville native has known three homes over the past two decades, living in Georgia for 11 years and spending her high school years in Houston before returning to the Rio Grande Valley.
She quickly enrolled for the fall 2013 semester and became part of the first freshman class of students that marked the reopening of TSC as an independent institution of higher education.
“I like the college environment here,” Almazán said. “Here at TSC we get smaller classes. I feel that we actually are someone in class, not just another number.”
During her first year and a half at TSC, the criminal justice major has excelled in the classroom and is on a path to be the first in her family to graduate from college. Almazán credits her academic success to the quality of instruction she has received at the college.
“I’ve learned a lot from my instructors,” she said. “They talk to you. They understand you. A lot of instructors here give you their time and talk to you.”
Wise beyond her years, Almazán realizes that money isn’t everything and wants to enjoy what she does for a career.
After graduation, she plans to continue her education and pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Eventually, Almazán would like to be a juvenile probation officer.
“I want to wake up and be happy where I’m working,” she explained. “I just don’t want to work for the money.”
Almazán is also active in the community. She volunteers with Friendship for Women and joined the Citizens Police Academy, where she had the opportunity to get a glimpse of what police officers do on a daily basis.
What’s your dream?
“I want to help my parents out financially, where they don’t have to worry. I want to do well in my career so I can help them out in the future.”
What does TSC mean to you?
“It’s opened doors to opportunities for me. It shines a bright light on my future and is an amazing institution.”
